1st September 2024 Windsurfing: Wrabness Wind Direction: ENE Wind Stength: 5/14 Surf / Sea State: smooth Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and warm Max Speed: 17.94 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 15 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Sunday 1st September – Windsurf ** River Stour at Wrabness – sunny. Foil – 17.94 knot max, 15.84 knot ave, 4.20 knot hour, 13.72 knot mile, 24.44 km., 7.57 knot alpha. Starboard Freeride 150 and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Sailworks Retro 7.5 and Tushingham Storm 6.5. We thought we would start the new month with a rare trip out of Suffolk and drove over to Wrabness in deepest Essex for a windsurf foil, only my second visit to this venue this year and sadly it was only marginally better than the first:( I had a quick breakfast at home but Mag took hers with her along with lunch as we left Felixstowe fairly early at 8.30 to make the most of the high tide with things looking promising with HHA showing 18 knots from the ene, sadly it did not make it inland up the stour and we only got the odd gust:( Being a sunny Sunday I had my fingers crossed we could park in Wall Lane, a narrow deadend road leading to the Stour but need not have worried as we were the first vehicle there and got prime position, Neil had just messaged from down the road at Bradfield saying he was rigging 6.5 so things were looking good. I set up my foil board on the little beach with lovely views up the pretty Stour, this is a top foiling venue when the wind plays ball! With the wind in this direction it is crossoff from the launch beach but there looked enough for 6.5 in the middle of the river so took a chance with that, being hot and sunny again it was back to the shortie and with loads of water I waded out to deep water and soon realalised had had way too small a sail, I did manage to pump up a couple of times but after a few slogging runs came ashore to change to 7.5, the biggest sail I had with me! With my small boom out of action I had to use my heavy bigger boom and the clamps on the tail of that also started playing up, you couldn’t make it up but I managed to get it working all be it not quite at the right length:( To be fair the bigger sail was not that much better, I once again had a few flying runs across the river getting my fastest speed with the bigger sail but it is heavy to use and I am not keen on foiling in marginal conditions, I have a 8.5 at home perhaps I will give that a try somtime? A few wingers had launched from Bradfield and were going way better than me but I am way too long in the tooth to learn another sport, it took me long enough to learn to windsurf foil:) Being feed up of floundering around I came ashore to have lunch with Mag and hear about her day. I think she had more fun than me walking around the nature reserve picking loads of blackberries! After lunch I did check the wind again but it was still light and with the tide dropping it was time to call it a day! We then went for a nice little walk along the beach in front of the wooden beach bungalows with lots of people making the most of a sunny Sunday:) Photo Album here |
